The Mummy of Mayfair by Jeri Westerson

Book two in the excellent Irregular Detective Mystery series. The reader follows as Badger & Watson take a job that seems simple: security for a mummy unwrapping party. I know, right?! But it was a different time and apparently the upper class used to enjoy it; the mummies probably not so much! We know how this will go: there will be a murder, an investigation, some twists and turns, and maybe a touch of romance along the way. The plot does go just like that; but it is so good! There are lots of characters that are well written and have such interesting backstories. We learn more about our heroes and how they became part of Sherlock Holmes’ ‘irregulars’. The murder is a real puzzler that (as usual) fooled me completely. I had no clue who did it until the author wrapped it all up in a nice neat ending; along with some lovely clue crumbs to the next book. Sherlock Holmes pops in and out in very believable ways. Are we sure he was really fictional? The book, and series, is easy to follow even if you are not (gasp!) a Sherlock Holmes fan. I like this series very much and give it an “OTTER” read and 4 stars. Do also grab the first book, The Isolated Seance. I received a copy and this is my own opinion.
